Free Tool Strategy

Brainstorm, evaluate, and spec a free tool that drives traffic and qualified leads.

A real workflow from the Magister template catalog — the same steps a dedicated agent executes for your brand, shown in full before you run anything.

What you provide

The steps, in full

  1. 1

    Brainstorm 10 free tool ideas

Research target audience pain points by searching forums (Reddit, LinkedIn groups, Quora), job listings, and review sites for core product competitors. Identify the repetitive, time-consuming tasks this audience faces daily. Generate 10 free tool ideas that (a) solve one of those tasks in under 60 seconds, (b) are naturally upstream of core product, and (c) could realistically be built as a simple web tool. List each idea with a one-line description.

  2. 2

Evaluate the top 3 by traffic potential and build effort

Score your top 3 ideas across three dimensions: (1) Search traffic potential — estimate monthly searches for the tool's primary keyword (e.g. 'email subject line generator'); (2) Competitive gap — are there existing free tools for this? How good are they? (3) Build effort — can this be built in 1–5 days with a developer? Score each dimension 1–5 and rank the ideas. Recommend the winning idea with a one-paragraph rationale.

  3. 3

Write the landing page copy for the winning idea

Write complete landing page copy for the recommended free tool: an SEO-optimised title (under 60 chars, keyword-first), a subheadline that states who the tool is for and what it does, a 3-bullet 'How it works' section, a 3-bullet 'Why use this' benefits section, and a footer CTA that bridges from the free tool to core product (e.g. 'Want to automate this at scale? Try core product'). Also write the meta description.

  4. 4

Create the distribution and SEO plan

Write a distribution plan to drive the first 1,000 users to the free tool. Include: (1) SEO — target keyword, 5 related long-tail keywords, and recommended internal linking from company name's existing blog. (2) Community launch — identify 5 specific subreddits, Slack groups, or LinkedIn communities where target audience gather and draft a post for each. (3) Product Hunt launch script — 60-word tagline and 3-bullet description. (4) Ongoing content — 3 blog post ideas that drive traffic to the tool page.

  5. 5

    Emit finding

Consolidate the completed work into one complete markdown report and record the durable finding with the native magister_submit_workflow_completion tool. The report file must contain the full report content — never a placeholder.

What it won't do without you

Magister workflows draft and prepare autonomously, but anything externally visible — publishing a page, sending an email, changing a campaign — waits for your approval. You can run this template once, or schedule it and review the results as they land.
